But it’s not just about the wine, it’s about the food and atmosphere too…  and there’s nothing like a picnic in the vineyards on a sunny day.

And if beer is more your thing, you can always stop off at the award winning craft breweries in Upper Hutt.

Beautiful walks & cycling

This audio tour is home to some of the best semi-urban walks & cycling in the world.  Majestic bush and secret waterfalls are tucked away waiting to be discovered by locals and tourists alike.

Kaitoke Regional Park is home not only the setting for Rivendell from Lord of the Rings, but to sparkling rivers and easy walks through centuries-old forest.

Or stand at the Remutaka summit trig and take in the wondrous views.

And the Remutaka cycle trail provides options for easy cycling along river banks, through native bush and vintage rail tunnels.

Lord of the Rings locations

Wellington based Peter Jackson used many locations throughout the Hutt Valley for shooting Lord of the Rings. We take you to the filming locations of Helms Deep, Minas Tirith and the Anduin and Rohan rivers.

You’ll also see Isengard, where Saruman’s orcs chopped down the trees for his furnaces.

The highlight is Rivendell, located in the beautiful Kaitoke Regional Park.

Historic tales

The Hutt Valley and Wairarapa has a rich history to explore. Learn about the early settlement of the area and the challenging railway history at the Petone Settlers and Featherston Fell Locomotive museums.

Or be surprised by the unexpected World War 1 & 2 history on the journey to the Featherston Military Camp.

Boutique shopping

In Greytown, experience one of New Zealand’s premier boutique shopping destinations. Set amongst the historic Victorian buildings, you’ll find a truly unique range of clothing, homeware and antique shops.  You can even visit an organic produce shop that is stocked from movie director James Cameron’s farm, who lives locally.

If that’s not enough, Petone also offers a great range of quirky and independent shopping, from clothing to records, to cook books and Dutch cheese!
